Use of locum doctors up 60%

31.01.14

Over the last three years, the use of locum doctors in A&E wards across the country has surged by 60%, according to figures obtained by Labour under the Freedom of Information Act.

The NHS spends approximately £83m per year on locum doctors to man their A&E wards. However, according to the Department of Health, the total money spent on locums has decreased.

A&E shifts can be notoriously hard to cover due to high pressure and undesirable shift times.

Shadow healthy secretary Andy Burnham blamed the coalition for not listening to warnings regarding a lack of emergency medicine doctors.

The BBC lead another investigation using the Freedom of Information Act, which found that 12,000 people made more than 10 visits to the same A&E ward in 2012-13. Over 150 people visited the same wards over 50 times.
